3 Creative Ways to Fragrance the Home

Nothing beats a lovely scent when you walk into a home. Fresh flowers not only look beautiful in our homes but also smell divine. They instantly make us feel happier. Scent and our senses are inextricably linked as we know and can create a mood or give ourselves a boost with some spring flowers.

I also experiment with favourite essential oils in my house, they can gently leave lingering fragrance in the places where it is most appreciated. In this post, I am sharing a few tricks on how I create a fragrance in my home.

3 Creative Ways to Fragrance the Home

Scented Cushions

When pets are allowed on furniture, they can leave unpleasant odours in the fabric. Fabric fresheners are perfect for removing these smells, but perhaps a fruity or flowery aroma would be preferred over a fresh laundry one every time. Make scented cushions to arrange on the sofa and naturally give off a favourite scent. Simply follow these instructions:

1. Soak three cotton wool buds with 3-4 drops each of scented essential oil.
2. Place the buds into a small cotton sachet, which can be made with some thin muslin or cotton, a needle and some thread.
3. Place the scented sachet into the cushion cover and fasten.

Scented sachets can also be sewn into curtain hems, pillows, and left in sock and underwear drawers.

Pot-Pourri

Pot-pourri makes attractive displays, and gently fragrances the room too. To make a beautiful home-made potpourri display, simply follow these instructions:

1. Dry out a selection of petal leaves, but don’t leave near a window in direct sunlight as they will lose their rich colours. Pick colours which compliment each other and the room they will be displayed in. You can also collect twigs and cones from the park or local woods to add decoration.
2. Choose a clear glass bowl or a rectangular one might be a nice contemporary choice.
3. Arrange the dried flowers in the bowl, or in layers in a taller vase for a pretty visual effect.
4. Sprinkle with drops of your favourite essential oil; it will soak into the dried petals and leaves and release slowly and gently into the room. You may have to top it up every now and then to boost the aroma.
5. Place in a prominent position like on a coffee table to enjoy the pleasant aroma when relaxing on the sofa.

Home-made Air Scent

For a quick and immediate boost, a scented water spray does the trick.

1. Mix about 500ml of water in a plant spray bottle with 3-4 drops of your favourite essential oil.
2. Shake to mix, and spray into the air when necessary.

Avoid spraying near furniture surfaces and leaving marks.

Now when visitors enter the home, it should smell like a garden in the height of summer.
