How to start a flower garden

Although a flower garden can show your creative side to people, it’s not always the easiest task to set one up on your own. Flowers are delicate and fragile, and so they tend to demand more care and attention. Whilst we love to sell you our beautiful bouquets of flowers from our shop Make Their Day Flowers in Charlton Kings, Cheltenham (we deliver too!), we also know how nice it is to look out of the window and see a riot of colour outside so thought we would give you some tips.

Cosmos are one of the flowers we recommend as a good bloom to grow.

But it doesn’t have to be that difficult if you are passionate about putting time aside to plant your flower garden, even as a beginner, you can avoid being overwhelmed by the amount of work and enjoy flower gardening as well with a few simple tips. In this article, we are going to talk about some things to keep in mind when you are trying to plant a flower garden of your own.

  1. Picking the right location for the flower garden.

Flowers need a good balance of sunlight and shade – extreme or less amounts of either of these can make it harder for your flowers to bloom the way they should. So picking the right location for each plant is paramount.

You also need to pick a spot where your flower garden won’t get damaged by children or animals. As previously mentioned, a flower garden is sensitive so you need to pay more attention to picking the best spot to promote blooming.

  1. Garden soil should be good for flowers to bloom well.

The soil in your garden matters the most when it comes to gardening, especially flower gardening as every flower thrives in different kinds of soil. Some prefer alkaline soil or some prefer the more acidic one.

Understanding the kind of soil you have in your garden will also help you find out what nutrients the soil lacks that will help the flowers bloom nicely. That way, you can buy the correct fertilisers, balance the pH and keep your soil in check while trying to create your flower garden.

  1. You are likely to have a theme or specific flower types that you want to grow.

Though there are many other benefits of having a flower garden, you also want to ensure that your garden looks pleasing to the eyes of those who visit. So the next tip is to pick a theme and then choose the flowers that you want to grow that fit the theme.

The kind of flowers you can plant can differ based on various factors – things like the size of your flower garden, how much maintenance you are willing to do, and the kind of flowers you want to grow, etc You can also choose to grow flowers that need little input to make the task of gardening a little less daunting on yourself.

  1. Plant care is necessary to help your flowers bloom at the right time.

When it comes to flowers, you have to spend a good amount of time researching what you need to do to help them grow well. Things like the amount of water they need, blooming period, fertilisers, etc all need to be known in advance.

You need to know the specific requirements of each flower you choose to grow or requirements of your specific flower bed as well. You can also keep things like weeds and pesticides away by taking precautions from the very beginning. For an eco friendly pesticide buster, there are options like companion planting. The more serious you are about plant care, the better results you will get when the flowers bloom.
