Support Local This Winter

The news this week was expected but it is still devastating for those of us with businesses. Six months ago we were plunged into lockdown and new phrases like social distancing, covid compliment and pivoting became words that tripped off the tongue. We had to adapt fast and put new measures in place to keep us all safe, I won’t lie it was scary when you have put everything into a shop like mine and suddenly I had to find new ways of working.

Thankfully, my loyal customers still ordered and I was able to introduce new services including delivery which has been really popular. It is certainly wonderful to get feedback that a delivery from me put a smile on customers faces in these hard times. We were all hoping things would return to a semblance of normality but now it seems that was optimistic and we need to batten down and battle through for a few more months yet.

As a local florist and shop owner the lack of footfall will have a negative impact, it will be felt in the high street and in your out of town shops like ours in Charlton Kings. We are coming up to a traditionally busy time but I wanted to take some time and explain how you can support local this year. Many of us vowed to support local businesses as it is better for the environment and local economy and here is how you can help.

Firstly many people spent months in lockdown decluttering and sorting out, therefore you don’t need to buy more stuff. When thinking of buying presents think outside the box, swap stuff for a beautiful bouquet of flowers that will brighten up someones day. Bring the outside in with a houseplant which are all the rage at the moment.

Secondly shop local, get out in your community go for a walk and visit the local suppliers and providers. Grab a coffee from your local independent coffee shop and browse the shops in your area. Many of us have worked really hard to bring you what you want. You will get a great service and some friendly chat and the money stays in local economy.

Cheltenham is home to many quirky independents and every pound spent with us we appreciate. If you are making hampers for Christmas, we have lots of local breweries in the area, there are delicious local food producers too including cheeses and cordials.

If money is tight this year, buy a smaller bunch of flowers and add a thoughtful card that contains a gift of time. Maybe promise a night in, a games evening or bake a cake. The thought counts and there are so many ways to show that someone is special to you.

This winter will be challenging for all us but we can pull together as a community and look after each other. I will be doing my bit, will you do yours?
